The total turnover within the German PCB market grew 15 percent compared to February 2005 while the bookings grew by 24,5 percent. ZVEI and VdL expects the German PCB industry to have a strong period in second half of 2006.

Korea is losing market share in LCD manufacturing, according to iSuppli. Korea accounted for 48.8 percent of LCD panel shipments in the first quarter of 2005, while Taiwan had a 41.8 percent share. One year later, in the first quarter of 2006, Taiwan took the number-one position with a 52.2 percent share of shipments, compared to only 37.4 percent for South Korea.

Huge bookings for ASML in Q2

ASML announced that it expects Q2 2006 order entry to be at least 40 percent higher than Q1 2006 net bookings of 62 lithography systems. ASML expects its Q2 2006 bookings level to be higher than previously disclosed due to strong customer demand for deliveries in Q4 2006 and Q1 2007.

Micron to double its CMOS sensor manufacturing

Micron Technology intends to double its CMOS sensor manufacturing capacity by converting two 8-inch memory fabs to imager chip production.
Micron, which currently produces CMOS sensors in Boise, Idaho, and Avezzano, Italy, is converting another Boise plant and one in Nishiwaki, Japan, to sensor production. Each of the four fabs has a production capacity of 50,000 8-inch wafers a month.

Samsung has big plans in foundry

Samsung is about to become a foundry giant. Over the next six years, the company will spend $33 billion in capital equipment to build six new 300mm fabs. The company already has one in the works, bringing the total to seven.

“We see foundries as the next growth engine,” Ana Hunter, VP of technology for Samsung’s System LSI Division, said. “We will begin offering strategic foundry services starting with 90 nanometers..

Samsung will leverage its joint development project with IBM and Chartered Semiconductor, all of which have collaborated to create a common platform. That also allows Chartered and IBM to act as second sources for Samsung, and vice versa. All have exactly the same processes running internally.
